IGN's Elden Ring complete strategy guide and walkthrough will lead you through every step of Elden Ring from the title screen to the final credits, including every collectible location, boss strategy and more.

Continuing in the vein of previous titles from FromSoftware including Dark Souls and Bloodborne, Elden Ring is set in a brand new world of dark fantasy, and brimming with dangerous dungeons and powerful enemies. Long ago, the land was ruled by an eternal Queen Marika and her demigod children, under the blessing of the giant Erdtree and the magical power known as the Elden Ring. However, unknown forces stole the Rune of Death from the Elden Ring's power, bringing about war and cataclysm between the Demigods, and the Elden Ring was shattered. Your task as one of the formerly exiled Tarnished is to return to the Lands Between ruined by war, and recover the Great Runes from the maddened Demigods to become an Elden Lord.

Unlike previous From Software titles, Elden Ring allows you to traverse a vast open world filled with lost souls, treasure, various challenging mini dungeons, imposing roaming world bosses, and secrets in every corner. Each major region of The Lands Between is home to a Legacy Dungeon, home to one of the Demigods, and more familiar to Souls fans as a more traditional and possibly linear dungeon experience. Because of this, you'll be able to approach your adventure in a variety of ways, and possibly even tackle the different Legacy Dungeons in different orders.

Get started with Essential Tips and Tricks and Things Elden Ring Doesn't Tell You, and then use our Walkthrough and Guide to help you through each of the main Legacy Dungeons for strategies on advancing through the tricky locations, tips to defeat the bosses within - as well as where to find every Item, Weapon, Armor, and more along the way. If you just want to read up on a boss, we also assembled a complete list of Elden Ring Bosses along with tips and videos on how to beat them.

IGN's Elden Ring Walkthrough is presented with the initial tutorial intro, followed by general overviews for each segment of the main regions of The Lands Between, with links to all major points of interest, mini dungeons, roaming bosses, and secrets. Once you've had your fill exploring and getting more powerful, our walkthrough continues with in depth guides for the Legacy Dungeon of that region, including how to get in, and how to defeat the bosses within while finding every item and secret path along the way.

Unlike other open world RPGs and action games, Elden Ring's side quests are exclusively tied to the characters you meet as your travel through the Lands Between. Many of them can be found in secret locations, and may travel to different regions as you do over the course of the game, pursing their own agendas. Some will help you, others may lie or even turn against you - and certain character quests can culminate in helping you achieve different endings by allying yourself to certain people or factions - and only by following their questline can you activate these endings after beating the final boss. Note that you won't have to choose between character quests to follow whether or not you choose to invoke an ending they may have for you. All character questlines can be completed alongside each other (or ended early if you decide to kill someone). Below you'll find the most major questlines that can trigger unique endings:

  • Ranni the Witch's Character Questline
  • Hyetta the Blind Maiden's Character Questline
  • The Dung Eater's Character Questline
  • Fia the Deathbed Companion's Character Questline
  • Brother Corhyn and Goldmask's Character Questline

For all other questlines for minor character - including where to find them and what rewards they give, see our complete NPC Character Side Quest Guide.

FAQs

Is there a strategy guide for Elden Ring? ›

IGN's Elden Ring complete strategy guide and walkthrough will lead you through every step of Elden Ring from the title screen to the final credits, including every collectible location, boss strategy and more.

Can I beat Elden Ring without guide? ›

While it's certainly possible to beat their games without outside help, I think the vast majority of players look up weapons, NPC questlines, boss strategies, even basic item descriptions to better piece together what the heck is going on in Dark Souls or Elden Ring.

How many hours is Elden Ring walkthrough? ›

When focusing on the main objectives, Elden Ring is about 59½ Hours in length. If you're a gamer that strives to see all aspects of the game, you are likely to spend around 133 Hours to obtain 100% completion.

Is Elden Ring ridiculously hard? ›

Speaking as a big fan of Dark Souls, Dark Souls 2 and Elden Ring — yes. These games are too hard, and I have invested an embarrassing amount of time in beating them. Of course, the difficulty is much of the appeal of these games, and there is great satisfaction in taking down a boss that once seemed invincible.

What is the hardest class to play as in Elden Ring? ›

There is no questioning that the Wretch provides Elden Ring's most challenging experience by far, particularly in the early game. It continues the tradition of the "Deprived" class from Dark Souls by starting the player as a half-naked warrior with low (albeit balanced) stats and a nigh-useless club.

Is it OK to use a guide for Elden Ring? ›

I wouldn't use any guides. The only word of advice I give you tho is level your vigor, that's all. ER is one of those 1 in 1,000 games that are actually good. Don't spoil it with guides, you only get to experience it for the first time just once.

Has anyone beat Elden Ring without dying? ›

While Elden Ring players were preparing for Shadow of the Erdtree to finally release, one hardened FromSoftware stan managed to one-up everyone by beating the action RPG eight times without leveling up - or dying.

Should you follow a walkthrough in Elden Ring? ›

Following an Elden Ring walkthrough can help you stay on track in a huge, often overwhelming world with many directions you can go. While you can go almost anywhere and find something new, after selecting your starting class and Keepsake, there is a critical path you can follow to see the ending.

Is it worth killing in Elden Ring? ›

Key Takeaways. Choosing to murder NPCs in Elden Ring can yield rare armor and weapons, but at a moral cost. Some characters, like Edgar and Millicent, have tragic stories that may make you think twice. NPCs like D and Freyja may fight you if you don't complete their questlines, so be prepared.

What is the hardest boss in Elden Ring? ›

Crumbling Farum Azula is arguably the most difficult region in Elden Ring, with Maliketh capping off a grueling set of bosses that includes the Godskin Duo and Dragonlord Placidusax.

Is there an order to play Elden Ring? ›

What is the ideal Elden Ring area order? Many would say that this is a pointless question - Elden Ring is very much an open-world game, after all, and the point is to go where you like and do things in the order you prefer.

Is malenia optional? ›

Finding her location can be tough enough, but then trying to beat her can only heap more misery upon you. Fortunately, she is an optional boss, and so if you are simply looking to reach the end of the game then you can just skip her.

Is Elden Ring impossible for beginners? ›

Elden Ring is a brutally hard game at times and it doesn't hold your hand, whatever your skill level. Remember that the game is designed to stretch you, you're not necessarily a terrible shot.

What is considered the hardest video game? ›

Is DLC harder than main game Elden Ring? ›

Yes, enemies do a little more damage, but that's to be expected because the DLC is meant for people who have finished the game or are of high level.

What is the best way to start off in Elden Ring? ›

Here is what you should do first in Elden Ring: Visit the Church of Elleh just north of where you begin (be sure to avoid the powerful Tree Sentinel on the way!) to find a merchant, Kale, who can sell you a Crafting Kit and Cookbooks, and if you want to explore some nearby cave dungeons, a torch.

What is the best way to fight in Elden Ring? ›

Once an enemy's stagger meter is full, they will fall to the ground and allow players to deal huge damage with a critical hit. Jumping attacks, heavy attacks, and Ashes of War are vital in building up an enemy's stagger meter; use them throughout combat to gain a huge advantage over the game's enemies.

What is the best role to start in Elden Ring? ›

The Vagabond is without a doubt the best Elden Ring starting class overall for complete beginners. If you've played Dark Souls game before, you'll recognise some similarities to the popular Knight class in the Vagabond's mixture of solid attack, defence and health.
